education system

Schools say subject-based banding will help weaker students level up

Mr Wang Bakes Good Karma's views

am i the only one who is not in favour of the subject based learnin?

i just feel tat education is gettin to be a more "messy" business
with the various "specialisation" or "alternatives" such as foundation subject for those who are weaker in that specific subject

i agree that the removal of the streaming will do the students good
no more elitism etc
BUT ..
i just feel students nowadays are being OVER-EXPOSED

i know.. broad-based learnin
but they are only pri sch ..

i still think havin a good foundation in the BASIC SUBJECTS will do them better in the long run
its still not too late to stream them after PSLE..
accordin to their needs or expectations or watever specific subjects they have interest in

parents nowadays are gettin OVERLY anxious deciding their kids' education path
it MIGHT be advantageous for their kids to get into good schs BUT they shouldnt see it as A MUST TO GET IN ..
gosh
i see parents cryin over failed admission to schools of their choice,
if their kids have the potential they kind excel in ANY SCHOOLS..
the kind of mentality the parents have will reflect on their kids..
elitism..

or am i being outdated in my thinkin?

Hi,
You are not outdated and not alone.

Kids should be allowed to enjoy their schooling. School should be fun ( well, I had fun many moons ago when I was in school... but that was eons ago).

Let kids explore what their passions are. We should expose kids to various sports and cultural stuff like drama and arts.

No labelling of kids ( like the EM3/ monolingual stuff).

Parents are mainly to blame when kids are forced to have tuition for subjects which the teachers in school should have been capable of teaching.

Tuition should be for only enrichment subjects that are not available in the schools.

Let's be radical. Demand that MOE let our children have fun again.
Cheers

Secondary education should not be about specialisation, but be as broad as possible.

Thus, it should be about introduction to new fields - linguistics, philosophy or whatever - and perhaps something fun like robotics.

We definitely should not be aiming at specialisation.
