MONSTER DAD RAPES & RAPES & RAPES & RAPES & RAPES DAUGHTERS
HE'S a defiant religious deviant with controversial beliefs.
Against the law, the self-styled preacher took 10 wives.
By Low Ching Ling
15 April 2006
HE'S a defiant religious deviant with controversial beliefs.
Against the law, the self-styled preacher took 10 wives.
Against the wishes of his community, he converted to another sect of Islam.
But to use the Quran wrongly to prey on his own flesh and blood to fulfil his insatiable sexual appetite?
What kind of a father does that?
The Quran says I own you, he falsely told his children. So I have the right to have sex with my daughters.
But in the eyes of the law, the 45-year-old father of 66 children is a rapist.
For more than a year, he forced five of his daughters to have sex with him.
Yesterday, he pleaded guilty to nine charges of rape and aggravated rape of five of his daughters.
Another 34 charges, including one of attempted rape of another daughter, were taken into consideration.
The man cannot be named, to protect the identities of the victims.
Amazingly, he has some faithful followers, though others have questioned his beliefs.
FIERY TEACHER
A friend described him as eloquent, with a fiery teaching style.
The secondary-school-dropout is said to have been one of the top students in a religious school he attended here.
He is well-versed in Islamic history and fluent in Arabic. He gave religious lessons at mosques, tertiary institutions and at home and also founded his own religious movement.
When he converted to a sect, he and his family became estranged from the community.
A friend described him as 'creative, hardworking and enterprising', always looking out for business opportunities.
The man runs his own business, with the help of two of his wives.
10 WIVES
His love life has been controversial, to say the least. He first got married in 1984.
Four years later, he divorced his first wife after she objected to his wanting to marry again.
He has two daughters, now aged 20 and 21, from that marriage.
Later that year, he married a 26-year-old woman he got to know when she attended his religious classes at age 16.
Within the next six months, he married three of her best friends.
Four months later, he started a series of contract marriages, with six more women. These were solemnised in Thailand as they are not recognised here.
All his wives are Singaporeans and they live in three HDB flats in the north.
They are attractive. Two stood out with their beauty. The others, too, had pleasant features, flawless skin and expressive eyes.
Over the years, his 10 wives bore him 64 children - 33 boys and 31 girls. They are now aged between 9 months and 16 years.
He once said he wanted a large brood of children so his religious movement could live on.
WELL-EDUCATED WIVES
Family friends told The New Paper that a few of the wives speak fluent English and seem well-educated.
All of them are believed to hold steady jobs.
One friend said: 'They're very knowledgable, not the kampung-type. They're easy to talk to and seem to have good upbringing.'
The women appear to get along well with one another.
On weekends, the family would go out in a big group to shop for groceries or go on picnics.
But the man is quiet and reserved. He is often seen alone and never with his family members.
Though their husband has a quick temper, the women were said to admire and respect him.
They think he's handsome, charismatic, intelligent and responsible. They obviously listened to him too.
And they made no attempt to stop him from preying on their daughters.
In his mitigation plea, he said that sometime in 2003, he had found out that his older daughters, the six victims, were hanging out with boys and behaving improperly.
A few months later, he gathered his wives and children for a family meeting.
LOVE & CARE
Referring to a verse in the Quran, he told them a father had 'ownership' over his children. He said that meant he could have sex with his daughters.
He believed that if he could satisfy his daughters' sexual needs, they would be less likely to have sex with boys.
He also saw it as the lesser of two evils - having sex with him would prevent his daughters from contracting illnesses. They would also always have his love and care.
His wives and daughters believed him. After all, they considered him a devout Muslim who conducted religious classes for his family.
What made it sick was that the girls' mothers helped in catering to his perverse pleasures.
Whenever he wanted sex with his daughters, his wives would approach them and tell them to go into his bedroom.
Sometimes, when the girls were reluctant, the wives would urge them to comply.
He even made two of his daughters pregnant. They later had abortions.
In mitigation, he said he had misinterpreted the verse in the Quran and was remorseful.
He also claimed his family had forgiven him.
Dr Jerome Goh, a psychiatrist at the Institute of Mental Health, said the man did not suffer from any mental illness and was not of unsound mind at the time of the offences.
PENALTY
He is to be sentenced on Tuesday.
For rape, he can be jailed up to 20 years, and fined or caned. For aggravated rape, he can be jailed eight to 20 years and caned at least 12 strokes. - Additional reporting by Ng Hui Hui, Nicole Na and Belle Charlene Kwan

One night in June 2004, the girl's mother told her that her father wanted her in his bedroom.
The girl, then 14, did not want to, as she believed he wanted to have sex with her.
But her mother told her that he was doing the right thing. She told the girl to relax and not to think so much.
When her mother was about to cry, the girl's heart softened.
She did not want her parents' relationship to sour, so she went into the bedroom.
He then removed her clothes and raped her.
The girl cried in pain, but he told her to bear it.

When she told her mother she did not want to, the woman told her about one of the Prophet's wives who sacrificed herself.
Upon hearing this, the girl relented reluctantly.
After the shower, her father lay down beside her on the bed.
He kissed and touched her. Then he raped her.
She screamed in pain and cried.
After she left the room, she told her mother about her pain.
The woman cried and hugged her daughter.
The girl is now under statutory supervision in her mother's custody.
