The yin to MM's yang

HE WAS a firebrand while she was a peacemaker. He was passionate and excitable, she was calm and quiet.

Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and the late Madam Kwa Geok Choo were often as different as night and day, but those who knew them said they complemented each other perfectly. And her death on Saturday is sure to hit MM Lee hard, they added.

Many voiced concern over how he was coping with the loss as they paid tribute to Mrs Lee and her union with MM Lee. The yin to his yang, was how Yio Chu Kang MP Seng Han Tong described her.

Said the former deputy chief editor of Lianhe Zaobao, who has written books on MM Lee: 'Ideal couples are yin-yang and complement each other. MM and Mrs Lee had shown over the past 70 years that they complemented and strengthened each other through their relationship.'

Law Minister K. Shanmugam similarly paid tribute to how the couple were greater than the sum of their parts.

'She could have gone out and turned her mind to politics, to law, anything, she would have done well. But because she combined with her husband and supported him, the sum of the two of them was greater than the parts, and therefore the contributions she made were all the more significant,' he said.

my condolences, to the passing of MM Lee's other half, an equal and confidante.
